Decorating Your Outdoor Space

Your deck is complete and you're ready to enhance your relaxing outdoor experience, how do you do that? All you need is a few decorative accents and some attractive furnishings to make your deck or patio a comfortable place to be.  In the next few posts we'll talk about a few ideas for furnishing, arranging and how to choose seating and dining pieces that are right for you. Keep in mind the style that fits your way of life best as we go through some ideas for your outdoor space.

Adding Flair

You may have included built-in seating with your deck, if not you can easily add free standing tables and seating. There are a variety of materials and styles that are sure to fit your needs including, wicker, wood, metal and plastic. Many outdoor fabrics are treated so that they can withstand exposure to sun and water so they can last a very long time. Along with furniture you can add rugs, lights and even paint to certain areas of the space. If you already have furniture but want a new look, you can always recover your existing cushions with new fabric and re-stain or paint the hardware.

What Type of Space Do You Want to Create?

How you want to make the most of your deck and outdoor space will lead you to the type of seating, dining and decorative styles you want to create. Keep this in mind when looking for things to add to your space. You may want a comfortable, quiet retreat where you can relax after a long day. Or you might like to entertain and have a large area for mingling or dining. If you have a family you will want to include something for children. Your style, taste and desired functionality will definitely come into play when you are choosing your furniture and decorative pieces.

Judging the Quality

When you bought furniture for the inside of your home you took the time to make sure it was built well and would last. You'll want to take the same time and care when choosing your outdoor furniture. Carefully look over the pieces you are considering for your outdoor deck, checking for sturdiness and inspecting the joints and fasteners. When looking at fabrics go for heavyweight materials and coatings that are designed to deflect water, moisture, mildew and fading.

Where to go From here

Now that you are thinking of ideas of how you want to add some decor to your deck and outdoor space keep a list of ideas and items that are appealing to you. You may want to look at magazines that are specific to the styles that appeal to you. Some examples may be Asian, Mediterranean, eclectic, or rustic.
