You've Got ideas for the Deck, Where to Get help

So you're almost set on the idea of building a deck in your outdoor space. You've got your ideas mapped out and you have an idea of what your budget will be. Now you need someone to help you with the design and building. Depending on your budget you may be considering doing it yourself or you may have enough funds to hire someone to do the entire job or help you along the way as a consultant to help make your ideas a reality.

Doing it Yourself

You can save a lot of money doing the project yourself. You will have more control over the things you want to create and build and you will be able to do it on your own schedule. You will just have to be sure you have the time to spare for the project or if it might become too overwhelming to take on. There are plenty of professionals who specialize in this type of project.

Using a Professional

A landscape architect has formal training that includes engineering, horticulture and architectural design. They can oversee the entire project, from the initial design through construction all the way to the installation of the project. This would be a good person to use if you're looking for a complete yard design and can spare the cost.

A landscape designer is not required to have formal training but is often employed by a large nursery or landscape company and is knowledgeable about designing and planting. If you have a basic idea and need some help taking the design further, their services would be beneficial.

General contractors can manage all the building aspects of your project and many specialize in deck construction. If the deck is the only addition you're going to have in your outdoor space, using a general contractor is probably the way to go.

There are several options to research to find the right fit for your decking ideas. Do an online search for company and/or consultants in your area who can help you with the process as well as finding ideas for doing it yourself. Check out book stores and home improvements stores to find books and magazines that will have ideas that may be helpful to your deck project. Another avenue is to talk to friends and neighbors who may be able to give you an inside tip for someone you may be able to work with.
